What's the risk?

An unauthenticated attacker, remotely over the network, with no user interaction, can fully compromise the system — steal data, tamper with it and take it offline.

Kibana versions before 5.6.15 and 6.6.1 contain an arbitrary code execution flaw in the Timelion visualizer. An attacker with access to the Timelion application could send a request that will attempt to execute javascript code. This could possibly lead to an attacker executing arbitrary commands with permissions of the Kibana process on the host system.

What to do

Generated by Wavense from the CVE record — an immediate mitigation and the permanent fix.

  1. !

    Mitigate now

Immediately restrict access to the Timelion application to only trusted administrators through Kibana's role-based access control. Implement network segmentation to limit Kibana's outbound connections and monitor Kibana logs for suspicious process spawning or unusual activity indicative of code execution.

  2. ✓

    Permanent fix

Upgrade affected Kibana instances to version 5.6.15, 6.6.1, or a newer patched release as soon as possible. These versions contain the fix for the arbitrary code execution flaw in the Timelion visualizer, permanently resolving the vulnerability.

Business impact

An attacker with access to the Timelion visualizer can execute arbitrary JavaScript code on the host system. This could lead to complete system compromise, allowing data exfiltration, service disruption, or further network penetration with the privileges of the Kibana process.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: algif_aead - Revert to operating out-of-place This mostly reverts commit 72548b093ee3 except for the copying of the associated data. There is no benefit in operating in-place in algif_aead since the source and destination come from different mappings. Get rid of all the complexity added for in-place operation and just copy the AD directly.

It was found that polkit could be tricked into bypassing the credential checks for D-Bus requests, elevating the privileges of the requestor to the root user. This flaw could be used by an unprivileged local attacker to, for example, create a new local administrator.
